Veggie Garden

I've been craving homemade pasta salad like a mad woman!  I'm sure it has everything to do with this week's heat wave, lets just say it is a whopping 93 degrees today!!!

To make a long story short, I was browsing this week's grocery store ads for the best prices on pasta salad veggies (tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumber, etc.), and my oh my tomatoes are pricey!  The cost of vine ripened tomatoes really makes me want to plant my own veggie garden this year.  I went to Home Depot to do a little research, and they have tomato, bell pepper, zucchini, cilantro, jalapeno, and strawberry plants- yum!  Now the hard part...I have to figure out how to protect the budding tomatoes from Maggie (the lab), as our previous labs in years past would pick (and eat!) the tomatoes a day before we would go to pick them...without fail!  :)

Do you have a vegetable garden?  If so, is there any advice you're willing to share with a newbie?  Thanks!

  1. Well, I said I have a black thumb, and it's true. We have a huge garden area at this new house, however. I think we have over 200 asparagus plants! We are going to plant the garden for the same reason. But my hubby will do most of it. He likes it and is good at it. Sorry I don't have much to offer for advice!

  2. I have a garden.. I have pictures of my garden boxes on my blog. http://runtomomma.blogspot.com I have made several boxes this year because of the prices of vegetables. Last year when the boxes were new I put some plastic fencing around the gardens so that the dogs would learn that they were not allowed in the boxes. I got the cheap fencing at walmart.. and it was about 2 feet high it worked great to keep the dogs out, but the weeds grew up between the fencing and the boards.. so IF I have to add fencing again this year.. I won't start from ground level, I will start from the top of the boards and go up from there, so that I can weed whack and keep the weeds down.
I had to creat our own garden soil here as our soil is all clay. We built boxes, and created our soil in them to grow our veggies!

  3. Oh I wish! My hubby is the gardener, not me. He does produce the best stuff. You might try bins or pots. Just my idea!

  4. I have only ever gardened in pots. I love doing it, though. I just love fresh veggies :)

  5. I have raised garden beds , I recommend

    -rotating your crops.

    -add flowers that attract bees.

-mint seems to keep all kinds of critters away(plant in pots or it will take over ).

    - use cheap chicken wire to fence in your garden , grow things like beans , cucumbers , tomatoes yes tomatoes on the fence . If you don't pull any of the leaves off your tomato plants they are much tastier.

    -Have fun .:-)
