1/2 yard, 1 yard, 2 yards?

Calling all experienced sewers, I'm in need of your help and wisdom!

I have an itch to build up my fabric stash with an assortment of great fabric (which stems from finding the perfect apron fabric in my stash as well as the need and desire to organize my crafting and sewing items into one central location). I foresee a shopping trip to M&L Fabrics in the very near future! :)

In your experience, how much fabric do you buy when building your stash, 1/2 yard, 1 yard, 2 yards, etc.? Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Thanks for commenting on my blog, Candice....like I NEED one more blog on my Google Reader!! :D I love the things you've made, very nice color and fabric choices! So as you have seen....I tend to go with the yard of fabric..and if it is at the end of the bolt, "well, just give me the rest"!!! And if it is clearanced out, then I get 2 yards at least. AND on top of all of that, I am the remnant QUEEN!! I won't pass a remnant bin without picking out something!

I typically buy between 1/2 and 1 yard of the fabric I like. It all depends on what you are usually sewing. When I am planning dresses or skirts for my girls, I will buy at least 1 yard. Otherwise, 1/2. I rarely buy more than 1.5 yards, unless it's for a specific project that I know will use that much.
    Hope that helps.

  3. I'm not a stasher, but I agree that it depends on what you plan for the fabric. Fat quarters or 1/2 yard for quilting (except backings) and 1-3 yards for clothing. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  4. Hi, Candice! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment on my blog. I've enjoyed looking through yours, too!

When I first started quilting, I collected fat quarters. However, I don't do scrappy quilts, so the fat quarters don't get used. Now, I usually buy a yard if I like a fabric, 5 if I think it'll make a great backing.

  5. Hey girl, thought I'd offer some fabric-buying advice.

When I'm at the store I try to envision what I'll be using the fabric for. If it's for the base, I buy about one yard. If it's for a ruffle, I know that I can get a few ruffles out of 1/2 yard. Since my items are small I don't need much fabric. And also because most of my items are one-of-a-kind, I don't buy much for extra.

    Hope that helps :)

    Love,
    Gussy

  6. At least one yard, that helped me stash build, now I'm on to 2-3 yards each.
